Brain Chemistry and Anatomy of Addiction

Please see attached a draft chapter for  a book I am writing called "The Plain Person's Guide to Addiction". I'm intrigued by the notion that stress and depression are both catalysts for an inclination towards potentially addictive behaviors (PIB's).


I'm also extremely interested in how a subject can distinguish between variations in PIB's such as habits, obsessions, psychological dependencies, addictions and even necessities. So I'm attempting to craft a matrix of consisting of the following evaluation criteria:

Impact on:

(1) brain chemistry and anatomy

(2) free will

(3) rational self interest (e.g. Detrimental effects on work, hobbies, social relations)

(4) Tolerance

(5) physiological trauma experienced during attempted withdrawal 


The target market are those that might read Psychology Today magazine but not necessarily Scientific American Mind.

Vital Energy - Love, Sex and Exercise

How many of us middle aged folks yearn for the energy to love, be creative and basically just work out regularly? The secret to vital energy is in the power of amino acids. My focus is on the trinity of mood and energy regulating neurotransmitters namely serotonin, dopamine and norepinephrine. L - Tryptophan converts to Serotonin, while L-Phenylalanine and L-Tyrosine convert to both Dopamine and Neropenephrine.
